In the gospel reading from Luke 24:36-48 for April 22, 2012, Jesus explains to the disciples what has happened. This explanation tells the disciples about Jesus' suffering, dying, and rising from death. Jesus' last words in this interaction are, "You are the first to hear and see it. You are the witnesses." Luke 24:48.
With this in my mind, I asked the confirmation class how we witness. We talked about praying for others, trying to do our best in school work, sports, homework, and help around home. I then mentioned the movie, It's a Wonderful Life, that is watched around Christmas by many folks. I Shared with the class how the charactor, Jimmy Stewart portrays, also strugged to see how his life had much influence on others.
Until the angel in the movie shows him how his life has benefited others. Stewart finally sees this truth in the end and loves his family even more than before because he understands the importance of trying to make a difference.
You are the witness trying to make a difference together. We often don't see ourselves as making a difference in our homes, communities, work, school, state , nation or world; but each one of us does make a difference.
I shared with the class the following story. When our grandson, Darrian, was about four years old, we were standing in Lake Superior in Duluth harbor. Darrian decided to take a step into deeper water and simply went to deep. I immediately reached for him and pulled him back to shallow water. I often think about Darrian and how his life could have ended right there in Lake Superior. God helped me to understand the value of human life more fully that warm summer afternoon.
Our actions and or words help others to underatand that we care about them. How will you and all of us serve and shre lives with others this summer? Mat God's love and mercy be evident in our words and actions.
